WOMEN’S WELLNESS
Hormone Replacement Therapy for Women
Personalized, clinician-guided evaluation and treatment options for eligible women experiencing disruptive perimenopause or menopause symptoms.
Symptoms We Can Evaluate
Changes in estrogen and progesterone during perimenopause and menopause can affect sleep, temperature regulation, sexual comfort, mood, and quality of life. Hormone replacement therapy—also called menopausal hormone therapy—may help eligible women manage bothersome symptoms.
These symptoms can have many causes. An evaluation is needed before treatment recommendations are made.
What to know
- Hot flashes and night sweats
- Sleep disruption related to menopause
- Vaginal dryness or discomfort with sex
- Menopause-related mood changes and other disruptive symptoms
A Personalized Treatment Discussion
Hormone therapy is not one-size-fits-all. Depending on your symptoms, medical history, and whether you have a uterus, a clinician may discuss estrogen alone, estrogen with a progestogen, localized vaginal therapy, or nonhormonal alternatives. Available forms can include FDA-approved pills, patches, gels, sprays, creams, tablets, or rings.
If treatment is prescribed, your provider will explain expected benefits, possible side effects, appropriate follow-up, and when to seek medical attention. Treatment decisions should be revisited over time as symptoms and health needs change.
FREQUENTLY ASKED
Questions
What can hormone therapy help treat?
FDA-approved menopausal hormone therapies may help relieve hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, and pain with sexual activity. Certain therapies may also help prevent bone loss in appropriate patients.
Is hormone therapy right for everyone?
No. Hormone therapy may not be appropriate for people with certain cancers, unexplained vaginal bleeding, a history of blood clots, stroke or heart attack, liver disease, pregnancy, or other contraindications. Your individual risks and benefits must be reviewed by a clinician.
Are “bioidentical” hormones automatically safer?
No. “Bioidentical” does not automatically mean safer or more effective. The FDA recommends discussing FDA-approved options with a qualified healthcare provider; compounded hormone products are not FDA-approved.
Will I need laboratory testing?
Testing and follow-up depend on your symptoms, medical history, treatment plan, and provider’s clinical judgment. Your consultation will establish what is appropriate for you.
Important Medical Information
Hormone therapy has benefits and risks that vary by the medication, dose, route, timing, duration, and individual medical history. Potential risks for some patients can include blood clots, stroke, heart attack, breast cancer, gallbladder disease, or endometrial cancer when estrogen is used without appropriate uterine protection. This page is educational and does not replace a medical evaluation. Do not start, stop, or change hormone therapy without consulting a qualified healthcare professional.
